Christian artists get their creativity from God. But how do we connect with that creativity that is coming from God? How do we capture the creative flow of God?
He is the vine and we are the branches. Like nutrients and energy flow from the vine to the branches, so God’s Spirit, His direction, His wisdom, and His creativity flow from God to us. It’s just like how God moved through the prophets. Whether you look at Habakkuk 2:1,2 or Revelation 1:9-10, you find both prophets using the same four steps as they approach God and release His divine creativity.
Let’s read those verses.
“I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. The LORD’s Answer... Then the LORD replied:‘Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.’” - Habakkuk 2:1-2
“I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,” - Revelation 1:9-10
So what are the four steps? They…
1. Quiet themselves down: This is both removing yourself from distractions like TV, radio, other people, etc. and also quieting your mind, stopping the left-brained, rational processes.
2. Look for vision: This triggers the right side of the brain as you visualize images.
3. Hear God’s voice: Allow the Holy Spirit to flow through you and take over.
4. Write down what they are receiving: This is both helpful to be able to remember what God is telling you, but also allows you to continue in the control of the Holy Spirit without stopping the flow by analyzine what you are hearing, seeing, and feeling with your rational mind. This may also not specifically be writing, especially for artists. This may be painting, sculpting, playing music and recording it, drawing, or any other form of artistic expression.
The inspiration of God, be it His voice, His vision or His emotions, comes most often spontaneously. We can train ourselves to receive these inspirations by quieting our minds and shifting from left-brained to right-brained thinking.
I’ll be writing more about how Christian artists can capture the FLOW of God in other articles. Look for “”.
