1. Do you have a sick child policy? Working parents have the additional stress of determining what to do when a child is sick. Different centers have varying policies, and you want to ask how a particular center handles the problem of sick children. Do they send kids home with any sort of sniffle or is fever a requirement? Or, are they extremely lax in letting sick kids remain creating an exposure risk to otherwise healthy kids? Parents should also find out what care options exist when a child care provider becomes ill.
2. How is the traffic in this area during arrival and pickup times? You need to make sure that the area is safe and not a traffic hazard. First and foremost for your child’s safety and secondly for your schedule before and after work. You need to know how much time to allow yourself particularly in the morning when you also have to get to work.
3. How are the children organized? You’ll want to find out how the children are grouped. What ages are the groups comprised of? How many children are in each group? Also what is the ratio of adults to children? These social factors can prove to be very important to your child’s overall experience.
4. What types of Certifications do you have? What types of training or education does your provider have? You want to know and be sure that the staff has ample training and experience in caring for children. This is also very important. You also want to make sure that they have at least the most basic and mandated certifications…the more the better.
5. Do you have any openings? This should always be your first question, because if the answer is no and you need care in the near future, this provider probably isn't going to meet your needs. However, if you really want this particular provider, be sure to ask about a waiting list or other contingency plans...just in case.
6. Do you have a consistent daily routine? Ask the provider to go over the daily routine for the children. What’s the structure and schedule? Do the children know what is going to happen next or are they surprised.
7. How are the children disciplined? Are children punished with a time-out, a "thinking chair," or some other form of isolation? You certainly want to know how your child will be disciplined. And you’ll also want to make sure that this disciplinary structure fits into your own family methods of discipline.
8. What is the staff turnover rate? You’ll want to make sure that the turnover rate isn’t too high. Children have a tendency to get attached to care givers that they are comfortable with so too much turnover can prove to be problem provided that this is a consistent occurrence.
