A Different Method For Training Missionaries

When many people think about missionaries, they think about men and women from one place traveling to other parts of the world the spread the Gospel. But is this the best method? Christian Leadership University has been using a different method for several years and seen some amazing results.
When many people think about missionaries, they think about men and women from one place traveling to other parts of the world the spread the Gospel. With this method, the missionaries not only have to be trained in various theological studies and evangelical skills, but they also have to learn about the culture they are visiting, possibly having to learn a new language.

This, however, isn’t the only method for Christians to train missionaries for foreign lands. At Christian Leadership University and Seminary where I teach, we have had over 300 mission students pursuing their studies who are not US students, but rather students in the developing nations themselves where they will be missionaries. Students native to those countries.

Through the use of the Internet and with free books sent to them, they are able to complete their studies in Christian theology and earn a Bachelor’s degree. They are then able to go out amoung their own countrymen teach others about Jesus Christ.

One of the places we have seen a big impact with this method of training missionaries is in Namibia, Africa. We have had students in the Windhoek Maximum, Medium, and Rehab Units for most of the years we have offered courses. These courses are sent to them in our ‘free to them’ mission program through Christian Leadership Seminary. At present we have over 50 prisoners that have taken at least 8 courses and 30 that have proceeded more than halfway. Some have been faithful and conscientious and have completed the Bachelor degree.

One of the students is Mangaliso Peter at Windhoek Central Prison, Namibia:

“I completed my CLS Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies in March 2009. What I learned from your wonderful courses I am now teaching my fellow inmates, so that they can also grow spiritually. It helps me also a lot to remain in the Lord…these 16 inmates have successfully completed the course, "4 Keys to Hear God’s Voice"…I will still teach them more from your courses.”

These missionaries have several advantages over the traditional method of sending someone to a foreign land. These missionaries already know the culture and language where they are serving. Additionally, being a member of the community, they have connections already formed with people. They are also more readily accepted the locals. And, in the case of the prisoners, they have access and connection with the prisoners on a regular basis which would be difficult for any foreign missionary to accomplish.
