Every wondered what the difference was between CD Replication and CD Duplication?
|
|
CD Replication is actually a process which, unlike CD duplication, can’t be done in your bedroom from your personal computer using equipment that anyone can buy over the shop counter. It is in fact a task which is usually left to the professionals since it involves creating a CD by actually moulding the disk so that it is an exact copy of the original master. As such all of the data and images transferred are precisely the same as those on the master copy (original) because they cannot be altered.
CD copying (or CD duplication) on the other hand involves burning data onto a disc and can be achieved using very little specialist equipment, little money, minimum fuss and within a reasonable timescale. It is particularly good for copying music tracks and photos discs for personal use and in small quantities.
When it comes to copying large quantities, replication is the one to go for. The type of people who would be interested in producing such large amounts of the one CD are record producers, photographers and indeed anyone who wants to promote their material by sending it out to interested companies, music labels and local or national media outlets.
As such the numbers of copies you’re looking at may be around the 500 or even the 1000 mark. For 500 plus it is definitely worth going down the CD replication route. Not only because of the quality, but also the cost. In addition, you’ll also get artwork produced for the disk can the packaging which can be designed and produced to your own specifications. This, of course, also makes the whole product far more professional looking.
In terms of cost, the more discs you get produced, the lower the piece rate – certainly for CD replication in London. For instance when getting 500 CDs produced you may be looking at a cost of £2.50 per CD, to get 1000 done that price may well drop to £1.50 per disc and so on.
But how does the actual process work? The master copy is actually re-produced as a glass master. From this a set of stampers are made. After that it’s a case of using these together with high-tech injection moulding equipment to come up with exact copies of the master (or original) CD.
However it doesn’t end there. The next stage is to paint the disc in a reflective aluminium then seal with a protective coat of lacquer sealed using an ultraviolet light source.
The final stage, the label artwork, is then printed onto the disc.
In the main the difference between both processes really boils down to money. For instance when duplicating using a CD all you’re really forking out for is the CD burner, software and the blank disc itself (that is providing you have a computer in the first place).
