Draksharamam and Annavaram – Temple Cities of Andhra Pradesh

Drakshrama is located in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh state in India. This place is very famous for one of the Pancharama temple, Draksharama Bheemeshwara Swamy and located in a green belt due to river Godavari. The temple along with Kumararama Bheemeswara Swamy temple at Samalkot has been constructed by the East Chalukyan king during 9th century. The temple also consists one of the Shakti peetha, Sri Manikyamba. Maha Shivaratri, Devi Navaratrulu, Karthika Masam, and Dhanurmasam are the main festivals celebrated at this temple. Irrespective of the kind, people who perform puja here will be free of their sins.
The deity of Siva is known as Bhimesvara Swamy. The speciality of this Shiva Lingam is that, the early morning tender sunlight falls on the Linga. There are nearly 800 ancient scripts on the walls of the temple. The temple is situated on the eastern bank of Godavari River. The consort of Lord Bhimesvara is Manikyamba. According to local belief, the Siva linga at the temple was installed and established by the god Surya. According to the local legend, the temple was built by angels in one night. Since the construction of the perimeter wall could not be completed before sunrise, the temple still stands incomplete. There were several attempts made to reconstruct the uncompleted part of the wall but all those efforts failed as the constructed wall started collapsing within a few months.
Praakara Bhairavudu, Viroopa, Natarajeshwar, Vaamana, Visheshwara, Dancing Ganapati, Dundhi Ganapathi, Goddess Kanakadurga and Goddess Annapurna are the other small temples inside the main temple premises.
Places of interest around Draksharama include Samalkot (Pancharama, Kumararama Bheemeshwara temple), Annavaram, Thalupulamma Thalli and Rajahmundry.
Annavaram:
The most distinctive feature of Annavaram is the shrine to Lord Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy on the hill top. The name of the Goddess is Ananta-lakshmi Satyavathi Ammavaru. There are separate pooja halls available for offering special pujas. It is located at a distance of 125 km from Visakhapatnam, 40 km from Kakinada and 80 km from Rajahmundry. National Highway Number 5 passes through Annavaram which makes it easily accessible by road.

This temple is located at a hill top. The vehicles are allowed to reach up the hill. At the hilltop there are several guest houses for staying. This temple has a unique Yanthra based on Tripad Vibhuti Narayan Upanishad which exists. The shrine is constructed in two storey, the lower one containing the Yantra and upper one housing vigrahas of the Lord. The idol is about 4 meters high is in cylindrical form. The base in the lower sanctum represents Lord Vishnu and the middle portion represents Lord Shiva. The image of the deity forming a single idol and representing the Hindu Trinity is of unique attraction. The main status is covered in two floors. The ground floor is for Pada darshan or to view the feet of the god. The first floor is the upper part of the Lord Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy.

From the hill top one can get a panoramic view of the surrounding green fields and villages. There is a river water barrage with boating facility and it can be visited while going up or while returning from the temple, available nearer to the main entrance of the hill. This place is called Pampa Sarovara. Inside the main temple complex photography is prohibited. There is a sun dial situated in the temple premises, which displays the Indian Standard Time. The Kalyana Mahotsavam of the deity during the month of May attracts thousands of pilgrims from all parts of the state.
