FCAT or Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is a test that is carried out in the entire state on students in public schools to establish how well they are learning and also to determine the progress. The tests are administered to students in Grade 3-10 and are meant to increase the standards of Education. The data obtained from FCAT is then used to report Educational status and progress for individual students, schools, districts and the state.
The FCAT test was introduced in 1998 replacing the State Student Assessment Test (SSAT) and the High School Competency Tests. Failure to take the test will adversely affect a student if they are in a public school because the academic achievement will be obtained by comparing multiple evidences including FCAT scores that have been collected over a certain period of time. The No Child Left Behind Act, states that it is mandatory for all students attending a public school in Florida to sit for FCAT. The schools will also not allow students to miss the tests because this will negatively impact the entire school performance denying it adequate funding from the government and also impact negatively the school Adequate Yearly Progress.
The grade levels that are a must to pass FCAT
It is important that Grade 3 and graduating seniors to pass FCAT for them to be promoted to Grade 4 and obtain a standard high school diploma respectively. On a scale of 1-5 a grade 3 student must earn reading score of level 2 to get promoted to grade 4. Graduating seniors are expected to pass mathematics and reading sections of grade 10 FCAT.

The student have a right to be notified in advance on the testing requirement, they must be given an opportunity to retake the test if they score poorly and they must be given opportunities to learn the skills being tested and therefore the school must show evidence that they taught the students the skills by use of lesson plans, notes and other learning materials that may be required.
