GPS navigation systems, such as TomTom, OnStar and others are more and more often becoming a standard option on new cars since they can double as a safety precaution for when there are problems. These systems are highly advanced and come with actual human support, which is always a plus.

GPS Navigation, or Global Positioning System navigation, determines the location of the GPS device on or just above the planet Earth. There are many devices these days that feature GPS navigation, ranging from cars, cell phones, portable computers and compasses. Where ancient mariners had to use the stars to navigate, we can use devices among the stars to tell us where we are.
A GPS navigation device contains a small radio receiver micro-chip that uses information received from multiple GPS satellites to determine the exact location of the receiver, virtually anywhere on the planet. It uses more the just one satellite as the location is determined based on the information received from satellites in different positions and orbits above them. This type of positioning is called triangulation and it is very effective.
Not all GPS devices make use of a navigational map system. Some, such as certain cell phones or compasses, are simply devices to let you know your longitude and latitude for informational purposes. The map technology has to be added into the device from the manufacturer and even this still has some limitations. These systems can only determine your route based on the map data they incorporate. If a road is changed or even eliminated, or if you leave a mapped road, to an unmapped off-road, the device will know where you are, and can give you coordinates, but it won't be able to offer directions and it will most likely repeatedly tell you to get back on the known road.
GPS navigation, while impressive, is not the be all and end all of how to get from point A to point B. simply put, electronic devices can break down or run out of power so it's a good idea to have a paper map available or have a simple GPS navigation back-up system like a cell phone. With a cell phone's GPS navigation system, you may not be able to get directions but you can find out exactly where you are on a regular map, which you can use to find your way back to a mapped area again. You can also use that location to access emergency help, if needed.
There are Pocket PCs with GPS navigation systems incorporated into their design. These Pocket PCs are some of the most intelligent uses of a GPS navigation system for many people. Along with software for the GPS navigation systems, you are able to see where you are and also what is around you through satellite photography. This combined technology can be extremely helpful if you become lost or your car breaks down in a remote area. Regardless of how you intend to use GPS navigation, know what your needs are and what you intend to use it for and ask plenty of questions, so you get the GPS navigation system you want.
