How to Turn Your Landing Pages and Web 2.0 Pages into “Action Pages”

An awful lot of marketers have landing pages, squeeze pages, and web 2.0 social media pages that do everything but make the reader take action. What can you do to turn your pages from inaction pages, to action pages? And when should you use a landing page versus a web 2.0 property page, in order to sell?

The first and most important thing about your action page, regardless of whether it is a squeeze page, sales page, or web 2.0 page, is that it should have one action, and one action only, available to the reader. It doesn't matter what action you want your reader to take--that should be the only option available (in terms how to navigate away from the action page), and everything about your design, layout, and copy should focus on that.

(Some marketers nowadays put email opt-in forms on their sales pages, making an exception that proves this rule. Whether this is a good idea for you or not is something you'll just have to test.)

What should your action page look like? If your action page is on a web 2.0/social media site, you'll want it to look as ugly as possible. It doesn't matter if the link away from the page is to your site or straight to your affiliate sales link, you just want to get your reader off that page as soon as humanly possible!

Certain social sites are better for this than others. Squidoo, for all the good about it, tends to have “nice” looking pages that encourage the reader to stick around (and Adsense blocks that encourage them to click somewhere else...). Whereas with a site like Wetpaint.com, you can have whatever link you want, right there at the top of the page.

Basically, if you've got a web 2.0 page, it doesn't matter what you want your reader to do. Build it the exact opposite way that most of the site's users do--make it ugly as hell!

Whole ebooks could be written on how to build sales and squeeze landing pages--and have! This article isn't the space to do that again. It's important to remember that if you give your reader multiple options, there is the danger that they will take the one least profitable to you. This is not what you want! So make sure your sales pages have no option but clicking the buy button; squeeze pages have no option but to enter an email address.

If you're targeting a physical product with a social media site page, you might just want them to click straight on you affiliate sales link. The social site pages you'll make for these kinds of items should be focused on the “buying keyword”--i.e. the exact make, model, year and color of the product.

People, who search for these keywords, already have their credit cards in hand, and are just looking for an excuse to buy! Give them every reason to trust your link--send them to a trusted site like Amazon.com or Best Buy (with your affiliate link, of course), and watch the cash roll in!
