It’s Never Too Late to Change Careers

It may seem the older you get the easier it is to just stay in the job you have until it’s time to retire, and many people convince themselves that they’ll have fun and do the things they like after they stop working. But such approach leaves you stuck in a bad job and counting down years until you can finally say good-bye.
After years of getting education and a few more on the job you come to a conclusion that you not only don’t love your job, but actually are tired of it and feel more and more bored with your choice. You could stay and hope for things to change with promotion or just tell yourself that everybody you know is in the same situation yet they seem to be able to deal with it and so should you, but that would only be lying to yourself and avoiding any decision making. If the situation is really bad, instead of pretending the problem is not that much of a big deal, you should bring it out into the open and take steps to change it for the better.

There is no point staying in a job you hate, but also continuing in a career that you’re not happy with makes no sense. The first thing you have to do is to understand yourself better and to decide if you need to find a new job in a different company or location, or whether you need a complete shift in your career. Run through different options and see if for example moving to a web design Miami firm from a Chicago one is enough, or maybe joining your small irrigation company with a big landscaping one is the right step. If you think just a change of scenery or gaining some security by becoming a part of a bigger endeavor will solve your problems, you’re done, but if you don’t think that’s enough, you may want to consider stepping on a brand new path.

It’s not easy to completely change careers, but it’s doable. You just have to be sure that’s what you want to do, otherwise you will not be able to do it smart. Once you’re convinced you no longer what to deal with law firm marketing, organizing weddings or whatever it is you do, your next step is to decide what you want to start doing. Think of the things that you find fun, interesting, challenging, take a look at your friends’ careers, run through your favorite movie and book characters to see what they do. Among those jobs you’ll find at least one that will call your name.

When you decide what it is you want to do with your professional life, you need to get organized. Does the new career require you to get special education, or is it enough to take a few courses or learn on the job? Do you want to join an already existing business or start your own? After you answer those questions and any other ones that may come to your mind in the decision making process, you can go ahead and one by one get through the things necessary to get you started in a new career.

It may seem the older you get the easier it is to just stay in the job you have until it’s time to retire, and many people convince themselves that they’ll have fun and do the things they like after they stop working. But such approach leaves you stuck in a bad job and counting down years until you can finally say good-bye. Isn’t it better to lift your head up high to tackle all possible adversities, but end up finding an exciting new career and loving it so much that when it is time to retire you decide to stay on for a few years more just because you feel like it?
