Four Way switches are used in between two three-way switches so as to control an outlet or the light fixture from three distinct locations. If one wants to control the access from more than three locations, or say from five locations, one would use the two three-way switches which are set on each end. Now you can use three four-way switches as well as the two three-ways in between.
