Although the official currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech Koruna (spoken: Crown), in Prague prices are often quoted in Euro and the single currency is accepted throughout the city by bars, hotels, restaurants and merchants. At today's rate of exchange (July 2011) your British Pound equals 27 Czech Koruna in your pocket, 1 Euro= 24.5 Czech Koruna and 1 Dollar = 17 Czech Koruna.

ATM machines are widely available throughout Prague and the Czech Republic, we strongly advise using your debit card in these machines as Visa and Mastercard charges will be very high. On purchases however, the rule is reversed and it is better to use your credit card in shops and restaurants. As with all foreign travel, do not allow the waitress/shop keeper to take your card out of your line of vision as card copying can occur.

In the last year prices in Prague for services and goods (apart from hotels) have increased by around 30% due to preparation for entering the European single currency.

The Hotel: Prague is filled with inexpensive hotel options where even 5 star hotels offer rooms at under £70/€80 per double room per night. Prague is not a seasonal destination and is very busy with tourists throughout the year with Christmas, Easter and the six week summer holiday period (mid-July to August) being the most busy. However, prices remain fairly static year round in central Prague.

Depending on where you want to stay in Prague prices vary widely. The heart of Prague, Stare Mesto, Josefov and Mala Strana are the most expensive areas while Zizkov, Vinohrady and Smichov, all 15 minutes walk to the central square, offer the best value.

The Flights: Prague's Ruzyne Airport sits around 12 miles outside Prague to the north west of the city. There are no trains from the airport but there are buses which link to two different metro stations from which you can make your forward destination. The bus is inexpensive (under £1). Average taxi prices to your hotel from the airport should run between 500-650 Czech Crowns. Car hire is available at the airport together with currency exchange booths and ATMs.

Flights to Prague are available all over the world. In the UK, you can fly to Prague from many airports with WizzAir, Easyjet, Ryanair, British Airways, BMI Baby, Jet2 and Lufthansa.

Flights to Prague from Europe arrive from Rome, Madrid, Budapest, Brussels, Stockholm, Hamburg, Barcelona, Warsaw, Bologna, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Milan, Amsterdam, Vienna, Geneva, Copenhagen and many many more. Prague is really well served for both domestic and international flights.

There are many low cost carriers flying into Prague so throughout the year flights can be found for under €100 per person.

The Metro: There is one sure way of losing your Prague currency quickly; trying to travel on the metro for free. The metro is only 18 crowns per person for a 60 minute journey anywhere on the network but if you try to skip this charge and walk through the barriers (easy to do, but costly if caught) you will be charged 700 crowns for the infringement; we speak from experience!

The Food: It is here where your Prague currency can stretch the farthest. Prague is home to many fabulous luxury restaurants but also chock-full of low cost communal style restaurants where you take a tray to the buffet and food is charged by weight. There are many good Czech cuisine restaurants who operate this way as well as low cost curry houses. Wandering just a couple of streets off the central square and main roads like Pariska and Havelska you can find many traditional Czech pubs and restaurants where the locals come for their dining experiences. A good value restaurant in the centre is Kolkovna (a chain of Czech cuisine restaurants) which has three branches in central Prague.
