There are some major changes coming in the standard Medicare supplement insurance plans which are assumed to prove to be more beneficial to the policy holders.

The future planning for the life after your retirement is one of the most necessary things for everyone. And the Medicare Insurance forms one of the most vital parts of this future planning. The reason behind this is that no man can be sure of the fact when he or any one of his family members would need serious medical aid and therefore it is always a wiser choice to be prepared for any sort of emergency. Therefore, most of the people these days have a Medicare plan ready for such emergencies. But though the Medicare plans are very much helpful to pay off your emergency medical bills but along with that it should also be kept in mind that the Medicare plans does not pay for all your medical bills. There always remains between the Medicare policy coverage and the actual medical bill payable. Therefore, because of this gap the beneficiaries need to pay a certain amount of the total bill from their own pocket in spite of having the Medicare coverage. Therefore, the need to bridge this gap is fulfilled by the Medicare supplement plans which are supplementary insurance plans along with the Original Medicare. Because of this nature of bridging the gap between the original Medicare policy coverage and the actual medical bill payable these plans are also termed as the Medigap policies.

These Medigap Health Insurance Plans were originally standardized in 1992 and since then there had been twelve Medicare supplement insurance plans available in the market. After the standardization of these plans only the private insurance companies are able to sell these plans and they are also administered by the private health insurance companies only. But though the Medigap Health Insurance Plans are sold and administered by the private health insurance companies only still since 1992 to June, 2010 the private insurance companies are free to sell only twelve Medigap Health Insurance Plans ranging from A through L. For all these years there had been no major change in the standard Medicare supplement plans. Moreover, according to the standardization rules all of the private insurance companies who intend to sell the Medigap insurance plans they cannot in anyway change the policy coverage of the plans. This means that that irrespective of the company you are purchasing the Medigap insurance plans you will get the same benefits under the same letter cover as is provided by the other companies. Thus the benefits of the Medicare supplement insurance changes with the letter cover in which they belong, like A, B, C and others and not with the company selling these plans. But along with that it should also be kept in mind that the policy coverage of the Medicare supplement insurance plans may vary from company to company.

Though after 1992 there had been no major changes in the Medicare supplement insurance plans, but by June, 2010 some major changes are coming in the standard Medigap health insurance plans. With this change four of the existing plans would be dropped and two new plans M and N are going to be introduced in the standard Medigap health insurance plans. Therefore it is hoped with these new changes the Medicare supplement insurance plans would prove to be more beneficial to the policy holders.
