If birth control pills are taken for a long time the endometrium (lining of the uterus) becomes very thin. This is because the oral contraceptive pills stop the ovulation process and so the endometrium does not get its usual dose of estrogen & progesterone.
1.Is it difficult to conceive after birth control pills are taken for long, say, years?
Answer: If birth control pills are taken for a long time the endometrium (lining of the uterus) becomes very thin. This is because the oral contraceptive pills stop the ovulation process and so the endometrium does not get its usual dose of estrogen & progesterone. This makes the endometrium thin. When one wants to conceive, two things may happen which could prevent conception:

a) Ovulation may not resume immediately – for which the gynaecologist needs to be consulted to look into the matter.
b) Even if you ovulate, the endometrium may take a few months (2-3 Months) to be receptive. But generally, one does no face these problems – Most people conceive within a month or two if everything else in this order.

2. After taking the pills, should you allow sometime before you decide to conceive? Do women need to prepare their body?
Answer: Yes, if you want to conceive after stopping O.C Pills. Wait for 2-3 months before you try to conceive. This allows the endometrium to get back to normal in thickness and blood supply. This would allow the embryo implant well and prevent an abortion.

3. Is it difficult to conceive if you have a cyst in the ovary?
Answer: Yes, a cyst in the ovary can be of various types and can make conception difficult. In the child bearing age, one could have:

a) A follicular cyst - which is generally less than 5 cms. This happens because the ovulation process in that particular cycle is not proper. This defect is generally non repetitive and does not affect
fertility (though one will not conceive till the cyst regresses either spontaneously or with medicines.
b) An endometrial cyst - this is a part of a disease called endometriosis.
Endometriosis does reduce fertility in more than one ways (Tubo – Ovular Anatomy is disturbed tubes are affected and become rigid and so can’t pick up the ovulated egg, Ovulation may also be disturbed if the disease has disturbed a large part of the ovary).
c) A hormone producing Cyst - Tumor affects ovulation and so the fertility is low.
d) A simple cyst – does not affect fertility.

4. Is conceiving the first child difficult after abortion?
Answer: After an abortion, it takes 6 to 8 weeks for the body to get back to normal cyclical rhythm (the ovulation and Menstrual cycle takes so much time to return to normal) But after an abortion, before attempting to conceive again one must visit a gynaecologist. So that the cause of the abortion is found out
and the treatable causes are treated so that one avoids the trauma of repeating abortion.
