What Does The Bible Teach? Mind or Heart, Faith or Reason

Posted On : Feb-16-2010 | seen (161) times | Article Word Count : 479 |

Western culture teaches us to train and live out of the mind and neglect the heart and spirit, but what does the Bible teach us? Does the Bible emphasize the heart or mind, reason or faith?
Thinking, reason, study and the mind have less than 1/10 the verses that faith, hope, love and heart/spirit have!

And now ABIDE faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love (1 Cor. 13:13)

Following is a study of the three abiding realities and what these abiding realities are present to heal - their opposites. “*” is a wildcard, meaning any ending is acceptable on the word.

FAITH Theme (Verses)

- Faith: 360

- Believe: 314

- Unbelie: 26

- Fear: 524

Total Verses: 1224

HOPE Theme (Verses)

- Hope: 142

- Doubt: 33

Total Verses: 175

LOVE Theme (Verses)

- Love: 522

- Charit: 29

- Anger: 235

- hate: 190

Total Verses: 976

There are 2375 verses in the Bible on above themes. These three themes (faith, hope and love) deal with issues which spring from the heart and the spirit. The Bible contains 963 verses on the Heart*, and 582 verses on the spirit*. Together they total 1545 verses on heart and spirit.

Compared to:

- Think: 82 verses

- Stud: 6 verses

- Reason: 91 verses

- Mind: 137 verses

Total Verses: 316 verses

Summary:

From the heart/spirit (1545 verses) spring the issues of life (Prov. 4:23) which are Faith, hope and love (2375 verses). Total verses on the heart/spirit and the three “abiding” heart attitudes are 3920 (nearly 4000 verses!).

From the mind (137 verses) come thinking, reason and study (179 verses). Total verses on mind realities are 316 (less than 400 verses).

So, why do Christian colleges and online Bible colleges teach to the mind? Why do Christian churches focus so much on reason? Perhaps the western culture has it backward, when it chooses to train and live out of the mind and neglect the heart and the spirit. For thinking, reason, study and the mind have less than 1/10 the verses that faith, hope, love and heart/spirit have. The “Law of Proportion” says that “an author reveals his emphasis or lack of it, by the relative amount of treatment given to a specific subject.”

God releases His life through union with man’s’ spirit (1 Cor. 6:17). The heart is healed of its negative attitudes when one calls out to God to heal it. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me (Ps. 51:10). Also note that God’s truth is a “spirit of truth (Jn. 16:13),” God’s wisdom is a “spirit of wisdom (Isa. 11:2),” God’s knowledge is a “spirit of knowledge (I Cor. 12:8),” and that God’s creativity comes through the heart of man (Ex. 15:31). Perhaps that’s why Einstein said, “I want to know God’s thoughts, the rest are details.”
