Before anyone can obtain car insurance cover, a few requirements must be in place. Most of these are required by law while some are required by the insurer. The legal requirements and motoring laws are enforced by the UK transport department. Therefore, prior to applying for car insurance cover in the UK, it is important to ensure that you have met your legal responsibilities to avoid delay in obtaining the policy or difficulty doing so.
Preliminary Requirements for Obtaining Car Insurance Cover
The three preliminary requirements for obtaining car insurance cover are simple and straightforward. The vehicle for which insurance coverage is intended must be legally registered with the DVLA or Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. If it isn’t registered, then insurance coverage cannot be obtained.
The vehicle for which insurance coverage is intended must be roadworthy. This is an important consideration for obtaining cover, so it is taken quite seriously. The driver must produce his MOT certificate if the car is more than three years old. This certificate states that the car met the minimum road safety standards and environmental standards as required by law at the time the MOT test was taken. Newer cars are assumed to be roadworthy. However, it is the owner’s responsibility to keep it roadworthy by completing any necessary repairs or maintenance on the vehicle as needed. Repairs and maintenance on the car must continue even after the insurance coverage has been obtained.
The individual requesting car insurance cover must also produce proof that the road tax has been paid for the vehicle in question. If the road tax has not been paid or the potential policyholder cannot produce proof that it has been paid, the insurer will not issue the coverage.
Additional Requirements for Obtaining Car Insurance Cover
In addition to those preliminary requirements declared by law, potential policyholders have certain other requirements that must be met. All of the information that the applicant provides must be accurate. This includes name, address, and contact information.
If this information changes at any time while the insurance is held, the policyholder must notify the insurer immediately. If he fails to do so, the insurance contract becomes null and void. If this happens, the vehicle is no longer covered by the insurer and all claims will be denied.
Some insurers might require potential policyholders to provide additional information, particularly when they complete their application. If they fail to provide this information, most likely, the insurer will disregard their application.
Car owners who are obtaining insurance coverage for their vehicle have several options including:
• Comprehensive Cover
• Third Party, Fire, and Theft Cover
• Third Party Cover
By law, car owners must obtain Third Party car insurance coverage in order to protect against liabilities. This is one of the provisions held under the Road Traffic Act (RTA) of 1988. However, they can select any type of cover for their motor vehicle as long as they obtain one of the three options.
