Fasting during Ramadan and fulfilling all other essentials of the fast is one of the basic pillars of Islam and it is the duty of every Muslim to fulfill these essentials. During Ramadan, a period of worship and discipline begins as Muslims fast during the day and pray all through the night. Ramadan also comes with special evening prayers comprising of recitation of long segments of Quran. These evening prayers during Ramadan are called ‘Taraweeh.’
Taraweeh
The word Taraweeh has Arabic origins and means resting and relaxing. Taraweeh is usually very long and involves standing straight and reading Quran. The individual is also required to perform different cycles of movement comprising of standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting. After four cycles, the individual may sit for some time before carrying on with the prayer. This is why the prayer is named as Taraweeh.
When the individual is standing for prayer, long portions of Quran are recited and read. The Quran is actually a collection of equal sized parts called juz. During the Taraweeh one section or part is read and by the end of the month, the Quran recitation is complete.
Teachings regarding Taraweeh
Muslims are recommended to offer the prayers in the mosque after the Isha prayers have been offered. Taraweeh is preferred when offered in a congregation and the requirements are the same for men and women both. However, at special circumstances, individuals may also offer this prayer at home individually. Although these prayers are voluntary and not compulsive, it is strongly recommended that all Muslims perform them during Ramadan because of the tremendous blessings associated with performing Taraweeh. They are also widely practiced and most Muslims try to accumulate the blessings of Allah by regularly performing Taraweeh during Ramadan.
Regarding the length of Taraweeh prayers, many conflicting notions are present among Muslims. Some believe that Taraweeh prayers are supposed to be 8 rakaats long; others believe they should be 20 rakaats long.
However, it is best to follow the imam when performing Taraweeh prayers with a congregation in a mosque. Therefore, you should start and end your Taraweeh prayer with the imam and follow the number of rakaats he performs for Taraweeh.
Ramadan and its Blessings
Ramadan is a month of blessings as Allah imprisons Iblees and allows Muslims to seek forgiveness, pray and gather as many blessings as possible. During this month, Allah listens to all prayers and offers greater blessings than any other normal day in Islam.
A Muslim, who fasts regularly, prays five times a day while fasting and abstains from all illegal and forbidden activities while fasting, gains a special place and all his prayers are accepted. Therefore, if you are seeking the forgiveness of Allah, Ramadan is the best time to do so. Allah says in the Quran about fasting,
“O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you, as it was decreed for those before you, that you may attain salvation.” [2:183]
Conclusion
Therefore, if you are a Muslims, it is important for you to know that fasting during Ramadan is essential. It is also important as it provides Muslims with the opportunity to seek Allah’s forgiveness and gather as many blessings as possible.
