Respect And Honor Of Women As Redeemed By Islam

Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come to know each other. The noblest among you in God’s sight is that one of you who best performs his duty. God is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (49:13)
This is just one verse from the Holy Quran. Of all other meanings it can have, it also makes clear that both male as well as female complement the process of creation of humans, as desired by Allah Almighty. However, women have not been dealt fairly enough throughout the course of history, especially before the arrival of Islam.
Not only was the Arab society accustomed to treat women unfairly, but almost all major societies of the world had same views towards social status of women in society. The matters were particularly worse in Arab society where men used to treat them even worse than animals.
Women were traded as commodities and were used as a subject to compensate and please friends and foes on different occasions. This ill-treatment of women had reached to a level of hatred. In pre-Islamic society of Arabian Peninsula, the man whose wife would give birth to a baby girl would feel ashamed and angered. Killing recently born female child was a quite a norm in society of that time, an act that Allah Almighty strictly disliked, as mentioned in Holy Quran as well:
58. When news is brought to one of them, of (the birth of) a female (child), his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief! 59. With shame does he hide himself from his people, because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain it on (sufferance and) contempt, or bury it in the dust? Ah! what an evil (choice) they decide on? (Chapter Al Nahl; verses 58 & 59)
Under such conditions, it was Islam that served to give back long lost respect and honor to females. As evident from the verse at the very start of this article, Allah Almighty clearly states that creation of human beings holds contribution from men as well as women. Therefore, they should maintain an association of mutual respect and honor to each other.
In pre Islamic society, the social status of women was not only subject to killing newly born female children, but women had to face humiliation and disrespect all through their lives. The message of Islam was like a spring breeze that swept across whole of the humanity. Islam made sure that women get fair treatment in all aspects and stages of life.
The following verse gives a detailed description of that:
At-Talaq [65:6] Let the women live (in 'iddah) in the same style as ye live, according to your means: annoy them not, so as to restrict them. And if they carry (life in their wombs), then spend (your substance) on them until they deliver their burden: and if they suckle your (offspring), give them their recompense: and take mutual counsel together, according to what is just and reasonable. And if ye find yourselves in difficulties let another woman suckle (the child) on the (father's) behalf.
To surmise, Allah is the creator of the whole universe, and He is the most just one can ever be. He clearly states that His judgment would be free of any gender biasness, as depicted from this verse:
An-Nahl [16:97] Whoever works righteousness, man or woman and has Faith, verily, to him will We give a life that is good and pure, and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions.
