Cord Blood Banking is a process of preserving the cord blood cells for the future use of the baby or family members for the treatment of different diseases. The other major reasons of choosing cord blood cells for stem cell therapy are lower chances of GvHD (graft vs. host disease) and lower risk of viral infections. The stem cells of cord blood are not mature cells so when they are used for transplant they do not trigger the immune system of the recipient. Recipient’s body does not reject the cord blood stem cells. Cord blood is also less likely to transmit certain common viruses, like Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV), potentially lethal infections for transplant recipients.
