Ugly Betty star Alan Dale is set to head for the stage as he recently landed the role of King Arthus in the London production of Monty Python"s Spamalot. In fact, he is taking over the role for Peter David son, who followed Simon Russell Beale and Tim Curry (Psych).
Alan Dale, who previously portrayed the powerful publishing businessman Bradford Meade on Ugly Betty, is debuting on Spamalot on Monday, March 3. He will be appearing on stage alongside the winner of the Swedish reality series, West End Star, who will replace Marin Mazzie as the Lady of the Lake starting on February 9. The current season of West End Star is set to end on Saturday, February 2.
Spamalot is a Tony Award-winning comedy production that showcases a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian legend. Based on the 1975 comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the play is very different from the film, as it parodies Broadway theater. Other stage versions include Broadway ( New York ), U.S. Tour, Las Vegas and Melbourne . In 2006, the London version opened at the Palace Theater and later received seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations last year.
Currently, Alan Dale"s Spamalot character is being portrayed by other actors such as Jonathan Hadary (Broadway cast), Michael Sibbery (U.S. Tour cast), Randal Keith (Las Vegas cast) and Bille Brown (Melbourne cast).
Alan Dale is ready to be part of a theater extravaganza, as the 60-year-old actor is backed up by his success and experiences in theater and film. He was previously well-known in Australia for his portrayal of Jim Robinson on the soap, Neighbours. Coming to the U.S. , he worked on roles in several primetime shows, most notably the teen drama The O.C. and Ugly Betty. Coincidentally, his characters on all the three shows died of a heart attack.
Fans can catch Dale with West End favorite John Barrowman on the Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood, and on the ITV drama series, Midnight Man.
