With more than 15 million visitors having enjoyed the spectacle that is the 2010 Shanghai World Expo in just 48 days (an average of more than 300,000 each day!), the event has drawn praise from leaders who have enjoyed the festivities including Stockholm Business Region CEO Olof Zetterberg who called the event ‘gigantic and fantastic’. Among the many events that have enticed people to take trips to Shanghai to witness the World Expo up-close-and-person include a look at future urban life, how to create an eco-friendly society and a multitude of shows that vary from day-to-day and are too numerous to list.

Expected to bring more than 70 million visitors in its 184 days, theWorld Expo still has a number of days left for attendees to make the trip to Shanghai. With a theme of “Better City, Better Life” and a goal to explore the full potential of urban life in the 21st century, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo is the latest rendition of the World Expo. Here are some interesting facts about the World Expo:

• China says that it spent more than $4.2 billion to host the World Expo, more than double what it spent to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. This figure makes it the most expensive World Expo to date. However, local media have reported that the actual cost of the event is closer to an astounding $58 billion!

• The actual size of the World Expo is twice the size of Monaco, a small city-state in South-Western Europe. This puts the size at 20 times larger than the last World Expo held in Spain’s Zaragoza in 2008. The World Expo site spans 5.3 square kilometers across both sides of Shanghai’s Huangpu River.

• In order to upgrade the city’s infrastructure, Shanghai allocated more than $45 billion, creating the world’s longest metro system, two new airport terminals and a $700 million promenade on the Bun as well as new roads, parks and bridges.

• While more than 70 million people are expected to attend the World Expo, only five percent of these attendees are expected to be foreigners. Shanghai has taken extra precautions to ensure security at the event with increased security measures including bag checks at every subway station and bomb-recognition pamphlets distributed to offices in the Pudong financial district.

• The 2010 Shanghai World Expo is promoting itself as the first green and environmentally-friendly Expo. In order to do so, the country built its largest solar plant as a part of the facilities, also using zero emission vehicles for transportation. However, most of the exhibition sites will be demolished following the conclusion of the World Expo.

• A record 189 countries and 57 international organizations are taking part, both records for World Expos.

• 20,000 performances will be held during the World Expo, an average of more than 100 per day.

• An estimated 20 world leaders attended the opening ceremony, including Chinese President Hu Jintao, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and South Korean President Lee Myung Bak.
The Shanghai World Expo will run through October 31st, giving you plenty of time to book a sightseeing tour of Shanghai to visit the World Expo.
