You can find flaws in the movie Gone with the Wind, but undeniably it is a classic and a legend in the Oscar history.
The movie Gone with the Wind is based on the novel of the same name. The book was first published in May 1936, is a drama, romantic novel written by Margaret Mitchell. Producer David O.Selznick managed to expand this concept, and Margaret Mitchell's best-selling novel, into nearly four hours' worth of screen time, on a then-astronomical 3.7-million-dollar budget, creating what would become one of the most beloved movies of all time.

This movie was placed in the Top 10 best American films of all time, which was released by the American Film Institute.

The story of Gone with the Wind boils down to a story about a spoiled Southern girl's hopeless love for a married man. It takes place in the southern United States of America in April of 1861, at the palatial Southern estate of Tara, where Scarlett O'Hara hears that her casual beau Ashley Wilkes plans to marry "mealy mouthed" Melanie Hamilton. Despite warnings from her father and her faithful servant Mammy, Scarlett intends to throw herself at Ashley at an upcoming barbecue at Twelve Oaks.

When Scarlett confesses her love to Ashley, he admits his feelings for her, but notes that Melanie will make a much better wife. Immediately after this meeting, Scarlett has her first encounter with the irrepressible Rhett Butler, the cynical, smart hero who eventually falls in love with her. They are two headstrong likes who simultaneously repel and attract one another. When Scarlett remarks, "You, Sir, are no gentleman," Rhett's smiling, easy response is, "And you're no lady."

The story follows a historically accurate account of the times. It begins in the enchanted world of “Tara”, and continues through its demise. In the whole story, Mitchell almost skipped over the subject of the morality of slavery or whether the south was justified in pursuing war against the north, but let the readers to decide for themselves. Actually to each story, readers or spectators will have a great diversity of interpretations based upon the actions or inaction of the novels characters.

There are a number of noteworthy supporting players. The leading actors of this movie, Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable who acted Scarlett and Rhett have been written as Casablanca’s Rick and Ilsa. No matter in which movie they acted, they fit together perfectly. Their glances and body languages say as much or more than their words. They were good at acting on their own and in their interaction with each other. Other players such as Leslie Howard and Olivia Havilland, who acted as Ashley and Melanie, did so well in the movie that they develop a deep sympathy for them and their plight.

As in the year of making the movie, it was one of the most expensive films ever made. It holds the records as highest-grossing movie for many years. Even to date, no film has sold more box-office tickets than movie Gone with the Wind. Domestically, the tally even almost doubles that for Titanic. And it won the best picture Oscar in one of the most creatively competitive years ever seen in Hollywood. Though this movie has flaws if you watch it through the eye of the modern times, but it is still undeniably a classic and a legend.
