A Steel Building on the Move

George Davidson stumbled upon SteelMaster Buildings’ website three years ago when he began searching the Internet for a metal building in which he could store his cars.
When he landed on the company’s homepage, his finger hovered over the mouse as he took a cursory glance around to see if SteelMaster’s product was the one for which he was looking. It was.

"I appreciated the strength of the building as well as the fact that I could put it together myself, but the true selling point was the arch design," says Davidson.

Davidson’s intent was to install a car lift in the garage, and that required quite a bit of loft space that many garages do not have. The arch design, which is SteelMaster’s signature feature, provides that space without the worry of beams or trusses getting in the way.

"With 100 percent usable space, you have the flexibility to truly customize the inside of your metal building anyway you see fit," says Michelle Wickum, director of marketing for SteelMaster. "And because the buildings offer a unique clear span design, our customers can easily hang lighting, run conduit, build shelving, add a loft, insulate and/or heat/cool their building."

There is something else unique to a SteelMaster steel building that closed the deal for Davidson.

While his SteelMaster building is on the same land as his home in Deptford Township, NJ, Davidson usually is not there. For the past three years, he has been traveling for work and only returns occasionally for a short period of time before heading out again. During one of his visits home, Davidson began creating a concrete foundation for his SteelMaster building to sit upon—but that was only the first half of the equation when it came to his final objective.

"I am going to use the SteelMaster building as a garage for a few years, but then I am going to take it down and sell it to someone when I don’t need it anymore," says Davidson. "The SteelMaster building is a temporary solution for me as I want to make sure all of my cars are protected indoors, but eventually, I am going to build a house on that concrete slab."

Portable Steel Buildings

Unlike many other structures, SteelMaster buildings are constructed in a way that they can be assembled, disassembled, relocated, and then reassembled.

"That is one of the reasons why the military owns a large number of our buildings," says Wickum. "They are very well made structures with a considerable amount of space, so the buildings can be used for just about anything, including barracks, equipment storage, training facilities, and portable shelters."

Whoever chooses to buy Davidson’s building from him in the years to come need not worry about time taking its toll on the structure.

"You don’t have to treat it, paint it, or maintain it," says Wickum. "With a SteelMaster building, you just enjoy it. The Galvalume Plus coating provides years of maintenance-free use, and the rugged resilient steel will take the bumps and bangs common to a working building. Steel’s inherent strength resists fire, earthquake, and hurricane damage. Steel components weigh up to 60 percent less than wood members and all steel products are repeatedly recyclable."

For more than 29 years, SteelMaster Buildings, which is located in Virginia Beach, VA, has manufactured, designed, and supplied pre-fabricated arched steel structures to 40,000 customers located in every state of the United States, in 40 countries, and on seven continents around the world.
