The winter of 2010-2011 has been particularly harsh and most people cannot wait for summer. The thought of buying anything too cool down after this frigid inclement winter is the farthest thing from most consumer’s minds. That being said, spring is already upon the calendar door and will soon be followed by the summer conditions of the three H’s; Hazy, Hot and Humid. To battle these conditions air conditioners have for many American’s become a way a life. Still there are others who view them as a luxury item.

With climate change on the forefront and El Nino patterns of extreme weather patterns across the country and the globe; it is important to moderate building temperatures when possible. Especially for those adversely affected by temperature extremes and air quality issues, an air conditioner can be as important of a regulator as taking medicine. This is most important for those who suffer from lung, heart and blood pressure issues, as extreme heat can be life threatening. For these people, air conditioning becomes more of a lifeline and less of an extra comfort.

In areas that are prone to high heat and humidity such as the deep south, an air conditioner is the only quality temperature regulator for three quarters of their year. In northern states and mountainous regions of the United States, air conditioning may be more of a luxury and an added comfort. However climate change is affecting most parts of the globe, the summers are warmer for almost everyone and conversely the winters are colder for most areas as well.

Regions that have not normally suffered from climate extremes are now finding themselves with summer heat waves. In the last ten years, even Alaska has seen an increase in climate change, with mosquitoes and glacial melting showing the signs that this normally cooler summer climate has changed to be a bit warm and balmy at times.

Air conditioning has established itself as the standard for perfect climate control for year round homes and seasonal homes as well. Air conditioning manufacturers have found to keep up with consumers they must diversify their products. Besides the traditional single room wall units, they have units that do not need to be tapped into the outdoors at all. There are floor units, ceiling units and of course central air units. Today air conditioning units are quieter, far more energy efficient, more effective and cheaper than ever before. In the last 5 years, the cost of a window air conditioning unit has become so cost effective that it is cheaper than buying a quality vacuum cleaner.

Additionally, construction materials for most units have been developed to make them lighter in weight as well. This makes installation a much easier task and much less of a strain for most consumers.
