Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry dedicated to helping one’s teeth and jaws work in union so that he/she can speak, bite and chew comfortably and effectively. Thus, when the teeth and jaw line are oddly shaped, the orthodontist corrects the jaw bones to position the teeth properly, thereby correcting facial irregularities. Common problems that call for the orthodontist’s attention include crooked, crowded, and protruding teeth, teeth that have too much space between them, cleft palate, and other irregularities in the face and jaw bone. They work independently or with your dentist to provide a comprehensive treatment

As earlier said Orthodontics is a specialized field and requires additional training of 2-3 years of university based post doctoral residency training. Orthodontic treatment can be complex, and it takes a specialist trained in a wide range of treatments and dentofacial techniques, do justice to this job.

While orthodontic treatment can be given at any age, the American Association of Orthodontics suggests that the right age for an orthodontic screening is 7. This is the age when occlusion or bite is formed and it is easy to determine abnormal shifting in the jaw. Thus common problems like crowding, openbites, and facial asymmetries can be detected and corrected. Crooked or crowded teeth are often the single most contributing factor to dental problems as it becomes difficult to clean the teeth, thereby allowing bacteria to accumulate. These people are often prone to tooth decay and gum diseases.

Although the ideal age to commence treatment is 7, it is possible (but difficult) to correct the jaw line at a later stage. It is said that the human bone responds to the movement until the age of 18 and hence dentists suggest treatment during this stage. The time taken for a treatment would depend more on the severity of the problem and cooperation from the patient. It is of utmost importance to ensure that you keep up with you appointments promptly and without fail.

The oral care regime suggested by the hygienist or orthodontist is to be followed religiously. It is also important that you keep up with your appointment for hygiene cleaning. Braces, bands, and wires trap food between them, hence it is very important that your brush and floss regularly. Hard and sticky food like pizza and licorice can cause the wire and band to break, hence make sure that you avoid them. Also avoid food like ice cream, cookies, and juices high in sugar content. Antibacterial mouthwash containing peroxyl should be used to reduce inflammation on the gums and cheeks.
