To be eligible for appointment as a General Notary Public, the individual must: 1) be a legal resident of the State of California. 2) At least 18 years of age 3) complete a six-hour course of study either online or classroom certification 4) Pass a written, proctored, closed-book examination, and 5) Clear a background check. Duties of a Commissioned Notary Public
It is the duty of the California notary public, upon the payment of any fees, if applicable, to notarize upon request any properly submitted document for any person, anywhere in the State of California. Notaries public are “keepers of the books” and notarize signatures on documents, such as mortgage closing papers and legal affidavits. A notary public is prohibited from practicing law, unless the notary public is also a licensed California attorney. It is very important to remember that a non-attorney notary public cannot undertake any acts that constitute the practice of the law.
