Another Study Links Beauty, Happiness. But is Plastic Surgery Necessary?

It's been known throughout the ages, and documented via numerous studies - that beauty is a boon when it comes to one's income, marriage potential and overall happiness. Plastic surgery practices nationwide know this and use it to boost their own profits.

But must a Plane Jane or Ugly Joe undergo surgery in order to land that great job, attractive spouse or consistent happiness high? If that's what a potential patient thinks, he or she may want to think again, says Dr. Phillip Garcia of Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville, Florida.
Economists at the University of Texas-Austin conducted the study by analyzing data from five major surveys conducted between 1971 and 2009 in the United States, Canada, Germany and Britain. More than 25,000 people participated and the results were not surprising. Researchers concluded that those considered most attractive generally make more money. On top of that, they typically marry others who are better looking than average and pull in a nice salary of their own. All this together, researchers say, makes them generally happier than the norm.
Specifically, participants rated on their attractiveness by interviewers (face-to-face or via photographs). Those in the top 15 percent of lookers were more than 10% happier than those in the bottom 10 percent.
Some think of beauty as a gateway to getting what you want from life. More attractive people typically get first crack at job interviews, dates, even better grades in school and college, some studies have shown. Of course, holding on to those things depends on what's beneath a lovely façade. But beauty definitely can be a foot in the door that less attractive people may never get.
But are these findings enough to necessitate an appointment with the plastic surgeon? Jacksonville's Dr. Garcia says, no.
"Patients who are happiest with their plastic surgery results are those who have realistic expectations of how or whether the procedure will change their lives," Dr. Garcia says. "We can't work miracles or make you look like someone else. What we can do is correct the features or the signs of aging that make a patient feel less attractive, making those features work better with the full frame of the face."
The result, Dr. Garcia says, typically is a bolstered confidence. And, as anyone knows, confidence is a very attractive feature.
