Driving in India can get very strenuous at times. Not only the roads are bad but the traffic is undisciplined and chaotic. Couple this with the heat and the need to get to a destination on time and what you get is the perfect recipe for irritation and frustration. And for garnishing you have the compulsion to shift gears a hundred times in short intervals.

If you are someone whose idea of a car is a means of transport that takes you form one place to another without asking too much from you. Then you are a default member of a growing tribe in the country that opts for automatic transmission over manual transmission. Car enthusiasts would jump to this occasion to point out how automatic transmission takes away the fun from driving, how you cannot rev freely and how you get much better control over the vehicle with a manual transmission option. And they would also stack the slightly lower fuel efficiency of automatic transmission against it. It is indeed true that automatic transmission has certain disadvantages over manual transmission and you have to compromise on the speed and might have difficulty overtaking.

But if luxury is on top of your list and hassle free driving is what you most want then despite the disadvantages you would go for automatic transmission. The top end cars like Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen have been offering the automatic version for a long time. But the automatic is now also available in middle range cars like Hyundai i20, i10, Chevrolet Captiva, Fiat Linea, Honda City, Civic, Accord, CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Mahindra Scorpio, Chevrolet Cruze etc.

In the US automatic transmission is a sort of standard but in India the trend is in its nascent stage. The women drivers are seen as the ones fast catching up with this trend as hassle free driving is more important to them than speed and rev-happiness. Women drives feel that the automatic cars are easier to drive and handle in difficult traffic conditions. With more and more women buying cars the companies are targeting them with automatic cars. However, several people buying even the ultra-luxurious cars do not opt for this option as ultimately it the chauffer who would be doing the driving and not them.
