Be prepared for a reputation nightmare that is set to showdown in early December. ICANN, the governing body of internet domains, has approved the issuance of .XXX domains under much controversy. While one of the terms for approval was allowing registered trademark holders to pay to bulk preregister their xxx domain equivalents before the mass market, many have not. For unsuspecting companies, this is going to create quite a firestorm.

Those looking to capitalize on the extortion potential will be able to bulk register xxx domains of other companies allowing them to make their targets miserable. Think about if another person had control over yourcompany.xxx? The power to destroy reputations is going to get ugly.

Though many popular internet figures have spoken favorably about the XXX tld, it’s unlikely that it’s going to serve its intended purpose, to separate the less savory sites on the internet from those that are more “mainstream.” To protect your company or name, it’s strongly being recommended that you consider registering xxx domains that resemble or bear your company’s name to prevent being in a precarious position. Though a lot of business owners don’t find this to be a fair cost-item, think of it like an insurance policy. Better to have it than to be caught with your pants down.

In order to ensure that you are being fully protected, please consider the following points:

• There may be multiple ways to spell your name phonetically. If you are not registering all of the possible variations, you are not fully protecting yourself.

• Also recognize that you may have multiple variants of your brand name. For example, if you are Apple Computers, you need to worry about Mac and Macintosh as well.

• Just because you have submitted a bulk registration for xxx domains doesn’t mean that you are going to get all of the domains you request. Be careful that you are not overstepping your boundaries onto someone else’s turf.

• Don’t forget other TLDs as well. Although XXX domains have the largest stigma associated with them, much damage can be done with other TLDs. It’s important that you are covering your bases.

The internet in a lot of ways is much like the wild Wild West and focusing on growing your business is top priority. You don’t want to get caught having to fight issues related to someone else that has your brand name locked up in a domain. It’s a battle you don’t want to fight and for a few hundred bucks, you can protect yourself all year long.
