Yes the world class destination and the magnificent centerpiece of Downtown Dubai is Burj Dubai which is also called as Burj Khalifa. It is the tallest building in the world and Dubai's new urban masterpiece. This building is surrounded by hotels, must visit shopping avenues and world of entertainment options.
On the inaugration of Burj Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Dubai ruler said "UAE is a strong country thanks to its leadership, people, economy and infrastructure" Which denotes that it is more than just the world's tallest building, an unparalleled example of an international cooperation, a symbolic inspiration of progress, and an emblem of the new, dynamic and prosperous Middle East. This structure notably marks the growth and development of Dubai in the changing world. It is also tangible proof of Dubai's growing role in a changing world. In fewer than 30 years, this city has transformed itself from a regional centre to a global one. This success was not based on oil reserves, but on reserves of human talent, ingenuity and initiative. Burj Khalifa embodies that vision. Burj Khalifa is a singular project that illustrates the success of collective human endeavour.
The initial excavation of building started in January 2004 and the official launch of the tower happened in January 2010. Altogether it took 6 years to complete this piece of work. At over 800 metres and more than 160 storyes, Burj Dubai holds the record of tallest free – standing structure in the world and is expected to hold upto 25,000 people at a time.The total cost for the Burj Khalifa project was about US$1.5 billion; and for the entire new "Downtown Dubai", US$20 billion.
Primarily the contractor was Samsung C&T of South Korea who built the Taipei 101 and Petronas Twin Towers. Later the tower's architecture and engineering was performed by Skidmore, Owings and Merill the Architecture firm from Chicago. Adrian Smith who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill until 2006, was the chief architect and Bill Baker was the chief structural engineer for the project.
The desin of Burj Dubai is derived from patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture. The design architect Adrain Smith informed that the triple-lobed footprint of the building was inspired by the flower Hymenocallis. The exterior cladding consist of 142,000 m2 (1,528,000 sq ft) of reflective glazing, aluminium and textured stainless steel spandrel panels with vertical tubular fins. The cladding system is designed to withstand Dubai's extreme summer temperatures. Additionally the exterior temperature at the top of the building is thought to be 60 C (110 F) cooler than at its base.
More than 1,000 pieces of art will adorn the interiors of Burj Khalifa, while the residential lobby of Burj Khalifa will have the artwork of 196 bronze and brass alloy cymbals representing the 196 countries of the world.
This artistic and scientific piece of work has private ultra luxury Armani Residence, Armani Hotel, Corporate suites, Restaurants, highest mosque, highest swimming pool and Public Observatory.
To conclude it may be mentioned that Burj Dubai symbolizes the business success story of Dubai. It is also a symbol of what can be achieved in the Arab World. But the important message is that this has been achieved in the city that has made its money out of globalization and international trade, and a commitment to a multicultural society where the technical skills and education of foreigners are harnessed to create a unique city. Burj Dubai also symbolizes the reality of the New Dubai of the 2000s where more than 95 per cent of the residents are expatriates, and the trade and business of the region gets done. Dubai remains a formidable business enterprise inviting more and more people across the world to try out their fortune in this beautiful place.
