The full form of CMAT is Common Management Admission Test that is taken by MBA aspirants so that they can get into the B-school of their own choice and desire. Even though the CMAT exam 2012 is going to take place, but it has been announced by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) that from the year 2013 onwards, the CAT and MAT form of management admission examinations will be abolished; instead in their place will come just one management admission test, which will be the CMAT. From the year 2012, around 4000 business schools will be accepting the CMAT score that are already recognized by the AICTE. However the catch is not all the states of India will have the CMAT Exam 2012; only 23 states will host the examination.

The CMAT score card will help the management aspirants to apply to various MBA courses around the country and also in the post graduate diploma in business management course to colleges that offer the course. The CMAT Exam 2012 is going to be a test drive for the CMAT 2013 as all management admissions will be solely based on the merit achieved by the applicants in the CMAT exam. The main reason behind abolishing CAT and MAT, the two most important management examinations that the country hosted is to curtail and reduce the financial expenditure incurred by the student on the various management admission tests. Though the idea is a right one, only time can tell if the CMAT will be able to help or not.

It is also estimated that by 2013, another 500 colleges will be accepting the CMAT score as their sole criteria to get through to their management programmes. For the CMAT exam 2012, it has been estimated that around, 250,000 students have registered. Like the CAT, the CMAT too will be an online Computer Based Test (CBT). Also the advantage of CMAT over Cat will be that it will be held quite a few times throughout the year unlike the CAT which is held only during a two month time frame of the year. The eligibility for the CMAT remains the same as CAT and MAT, which is a graduate with at least 50% marks in any field; final year students are given the scope to appear as well.

The CMAT exam 2012 is expected to be held in the month of February, during a 9 day time frame, from 20th February to 28th February. The results are expected to be announced at the end of March 2012. The CMAT which is a national level entrance exam will not be the yardstick for measure for students who want to get through to the prestigious IIMs and other deemed universities. Since the IIMs are autonomous bodies, they are exempted from the CMAT and will be allowed to carry on with their own set admission tests. But for all the other private colleges, the CMAT score will have to do.
