Every year, more than 30,000 Americans suffer from cancer of the kidney. Lifestyle plays a vital role in the development of this cancer. Some of the peculiar reasons are:

• Obesity – Obese men are more prone to cancer
• Smoking – Smoking is known to develop cancer in kidneys and bladder
• Gender – This cancer is known to affect men more than women
• History – Family history of cancer is known to develop cancer in other members
• Age – Men above the age of 60 years are more susceptible to cancerous growth
• Work environment – Certain chemicals and substances are known to initiate cancer in humans.
• High blood pressure – This is a known factor to induce cancerous growth

Usually primary stages of cancer of the kidney are undetectable in the normal course. At times, cancer is detected during the ultrasound test of a CT scan done for some other reason. The treatment of kidney cancer depends on various factors like development of cancer, age of patient, gender of the patient, and the response of the patient to various treatment types. The entire motive of the treatment is to offer relief from cancer.

Elevated PSA – Is it a warning sign or a false alarm?

The prostate specific antigen is a protein available in the blood and is secreted by the prostate gland. Very minor quantity of PSA is found in the blood during normal metabolism. However, certain times, due to cancerous growth in prostate gland and some other reasons, the counts of PSA in blood increase beyond the normal levels. This becomes a warning sign and demands initiation of diagnosis. High PSA level could be the first signal from body mechanism to warn about cancerous growth. Therefore, elevated PSA count does need immediate attention and proper care.

However, it is a very ideal situation to screen for prostate cancer when

• At the age of 50 or more
• Family history
• Difficulty in urination
• Blood in urine
• Frequent urination
• Routine annual check ups

The affirmative diagnosis of prostate cancer only on the basis of elevated PSA counts, is a wrong method. In addition to this, you need to undergo a direct rectal test for affirmation of a tumor’s growth or abnormally enlarged prostate gland.

The entire objective of these tests is to identify the rightful cause for the elevated PSA count. Warning signs need to be taken seriously and increase in PSA counts could be the first sign!
