If you are providing care to a family member that is ill or immobile, you know that the experience can be extremely rewarding. You probably appreciate the opportunity to help someone who has been there for you in the past, especially in the case of older parents that now require your assistance. However, if you are a family caregiver, you also know that it can be very stressful and exhausting to help someone through all of their daily tasks. There may be times that you will need to take some time off from this very demanding job. In some cases, this may be due to changes in your life, such as having young children at home. Or you may just want to go on vacation or to have a little downtime during the holidays.

Regardless of the reason, when you use respite care, it can give you an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate. Having this chance to unwind will allow you to resume your responsibilities as the family caregiver refreshed and energized after your break. There are different types of respite care to consider when you are in need of extra help. Depending on your needs and that of your loved one, you can choose either in-home or out-of-home respite care.

In-home respite care may be a good solution for you if you are in need of general rest or just need a little extra free time during the holidays or around a particularly stressful time for you. With this option, you can have a home care professional come into your home for a few hours, an entire day or even longer and provide care to your loved one. You could also consider having another family member or friend volunteer to help provide care while you take some time off to unwind. This is also helpful because you do not have to relocate them in order to find someone to provide them with care as relocating people who are elderly or have trouble moving around can be a significant challenge.

Another option to consider is using out of-home respite care. This is a good choice if your family member has very significant needs and has trouble performing basic tasks. This type of respite care includes residential centers or adult day care programs. This allows you to ensure that someone is available to take care of them at any time they need help. If for example, your family member lives with you and you are going away on vacation, you may want to have them go to a residential center on a temporary basis.

Regardless of the type of respite care you decide to use, it is important that you remember that you are performing a significant service by helping to care for your family member. It is also extremely challenging and it is important that you recognize when you are overwhelmed or just need a little extra assistance. You should be honest with yourself and ask family members for help or consider a formal respite care program that fits your needs.
