For many people, buying a home is one of the biggest decisions you will ever have to make. There are many things to consider when you begin looking into the real estate market, and since it is an expensive and time-consuming decision, it can also seem very overwhelming at times. Many people focus solely on whether or not they are able to afford the home they are looking for, but once you’ve decided on the price that is right for you, there are many other important facts to consider before purchasing real estate. In order to simplify the process and narrow down the things that are really important to you and your family, it may be helpful to follow a checklist for finding the perfect home for you.

Neighborhood
It is a good idea to think very carefully about the characteristics you would like your new neighborhood to have and don’t compromise on the most important factors. If you are a new parent, you may want to live near other young families. It may also be important to live near a great school system or in an area that offers the opportunity to experience many cultural activities such as museums or parks. You may also want to live close to the beach or in an area close to nature. It is sometimes a challenge to find a new home that gives you everything you are looking for, but with focus and patience, you will be able to buy a home that is in a neighborhood that you can enjoy for a long time.

Proximity to Work
Is your prospective new home relatively close to your place of business? Especially in today’s real estate market, many people find themselves moving further and further outside of the city in order to find a home that they can afford. However, your desire to have this dream home should also be compared against the effect that an extremely long commute may have your quality of life. If you are exhausted and frustrated before you even make it to work, that is not going to make for a good and healthy environment for you and in fact, could negatively impact your productivity at work. In addition, you will quickly notice the toll a long and challenging commute will take on your overall well-being.

Living Near Family and Friends
Besides thinking about your daily commute, you may also want to consider living relatively close to your family and friends. Of course, you don’t need to live walking distance to everyone you know but it can be very comforting to be able to visit your family in a short period of time, or to be able to have friends over for a last minute get-together.

There are so many things to consider when you first get into the real estate market and decide to buy a home. However, it is always a good idea to determine the factors that will have the greatest impact on your happiness and make those your top priority.
