There are various types of energy efficient water heaters available in the market. Some of the most popular ones are:
Tankless Heaters - Conventional hot water heaters consume energy round the clock for keeping the water hot, even when they are not in use. Tankless heaters or demand water heaters heat water only while it runs through the pipes. Thus, they heat the water as and when you need, thereby saving energy and reducing your energy bills substantially. These models can provide a continuous supply of hot water so you can use them without worrying about the hot water running out. These designs are smaller as compared to the traditional ones and hence can even be installed outdoors, thereby saving your indoor space. Gas Heaters – Conventional continuous gas water heaters store water in a tank, and are powered by natural gas or propane. While propane is easily available, natural gas is a much cleaner option. Gas Condensing Heaters – These use a new technology introduced in 2010. These use more efficient heat exchangers and for capturing heat from fuel sources. Not only can they reduce the energy bills by as much as thirty percent, they can also reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. They provide a continuous stream of heated water as a result of greater efficiency.
Heat Pump Heaters – These too are based on a new technology. They function by drawing the hot, outside air to heat the water. However, these are effective in areas with warm climate only.
Solar Water Heaters – Solar hot water heater systems can cut down your CO2 emissions and energy bills by almost fifty present compared to electric heaters. The average life span of a solar water heater is 20 years. Although the cost of installing a solar water system is high, it more than makes up for this high cost with its energy efficiency.
