Home to a culture that is one of the most vibrant in the world, an emerging economy and one of the largest populations on earth, India makes for an incredible destination. Tourism has become the biggest sector of the economy in India (6.23 percent of GDP). There are now resorts and airlines as luxurious as anywhere in the world there. Still, there is danger to traveling in an emerging country that still has such rampant crime and poverty.

A History of Tourism
All different parts of India have been sites of significant tourism throughout history, stretching back to the beginning of civilization. The Greeks would come to regions such as Bihar in order to study. Kashmir's mountains would attract the most intrepid European travelers of the 19th century.

Significance
India is poised to become one of the largest tourism destinations in the entire world. With the gains in the economy coming largely from tourism, that money is being reinvested in order to attract even more people to the country. India could soon attract the most tourists out of any nation in the world.

Considerations
While the growth in India's tourism industry is impressive, it still has a ways to go until it truly becomes as accessible for tourists as Western Europe and North America. It has virtually no mass transit infrastructure anywhere in the country. It only has 256 airports with paved runways to serve its billion residents. (As a comparison, Chile has more.) Part of this is due to the short terms of power in the government; part of it is due to massive corruption. Beyond this, India is short in "tourist class" hotel rooms, having roughly only 25,000 of them. By comparison, there are more than 140,000 such rooms in Las Vegas alone.

Attractions
The top tourist attractions in India are famous worldwide, taking up spots on various "seven wonders" lists. Bihar has archaeological artifacts dating back three millennia. Delhi has the Qutub Minar (the largest stone minaret in the world), the Red Fort (the walled area of Delhi) and Humayun's Tomb--all World Heritage sites. The beaches of Goa are among the best in the world. Of course, one of India's great national and historic symbols, the Taj Mahal, hosts from 2 to 4 million visitors every year.

Medical Tourism
Another area of India's tourism industry that is growing and thriving is the practice of medical tourism. India has world-class doctors with the latest medical technology, all at severely reduced costs (approximately one tenth of costs in Britain or America). India is looking to invest in its travel tourism industry by diverting some of its Market Development Assistance funds to hospitals in order to help them gain accreditation and become more attractive to foreigners.
