A rather startling statistic from a recent Consumer Reports survey, says many home appliances seem to breakdown or malfunction within a 3-4 year time frame. Take a look at some of the high percentages of breakdowns in that time frame:

- 36 percent – side-by-side refrigerator/freezers with ice makers

- 28 percent- Refrigerators with freezers with ice makers

- 25 percent – Front-loading washing machines

- 20 percent – Dishwashers

Those are pretty high percentages for breakdowns on major home appliances! And most of those breakdowns are due to the influx of more digital parts that can go wrong. Today’s appliances are full of electronic parts and digital display screens, and even hand sensors and calculators. Our appliances seem to do more today, but there’s also a lot more that can go wrong.

Appliance Parts Company is in the business of providing appliance replacement part for a wide range of common household appliances, but we don’t encourage these high percentages behind breaking appliances. We still feel that consumers should know that they can count on how long the particular appliance they are buying should last.

Buy New or Replace?

So when homeowners are faced with a less than 5-yr-old appliance starting to break down, do they seek out appliance repairs? Or do they decide to get a new appliance? Sometimes that depends on the select appliance. Is it one that is constantly seeing fast-moving technology upgrades, like refrigerators and dishwashers? Or is the appliance like a stove range that can be repaired with an appliance replacement part? If so, you can check the approximate cost of appliance repair parts plus labor costs to fix your broken down appliances.

Let’s check some examples where a simple appliance part can save you tons of money over buying a new home appliance.

Dishwashers: Dishwashers can get expensive, if homeowners don’t watch for the small things, like cleaning the filters, checking the seal around the dishwasher door or rusting racks. SOLUTION: Buy a new dishwasher filter or door sealer.

Washing machine: If you are not seeing water coming into your washing machine after a few years of constant use, then you might have a faulty water inlet valve. You can find a worthy replacement for under $100 that will get your washer working like brand new again, and you’ll save a thousand dollars in the process.

Dryer: What happens when your clothes aren’t drying well? Your machine’s vent may be partially clogged. You can try to clear that out, and see if your dryer’s performance improves.

Refrigerator: If your compressor no longer operates to its capacity, then it may be time to look around online for a replacement refrigerator compressor. They are not cheap but it will still save you money over the long run to repair your refrigerator instead of buying a new one.
