After choosing the topic you need to make a proper hypothesis. The importance of making a proper hypothesis is the first most important thing of making a dissertation. The success and effectiveness of research depends crucially upon the elimination of unnecessary and irrelevant facts and picking out of relevant facts. Now, this elimination and selection of facts hinges upon our hypothesis. Although Newton had said,” I do not make hypothesis”, he fully recognized the importance of hypothesis for scientific discovery. T.H.Huxley makes this significant observation,” Those who refuse to go beyond fact rarely get as far as fact. Almost every great step (in the history of science) has been made possible by the anticipation of Nature, that is, by the invention of hypothesis which through verifiable, often had very little to start with.” According to Charles Darwin that means no observation is possible if we don’t have some hypothesis in mind. He says,” How odd it is that any one should not see that an observation must be for or against some view, if it is to be of any service.”
The next stage is to select a proper sampling method. There are different types of sampling methods like-
1) Lottery method- This is the simplest way of making the selection. The number of items in a data is written on sheets of paper or cards and they are thrown into a box. Now a neutral observer or the investigator blindfolding him selects the number of items required in the sample. Here there is no partiality in favor of any item. The play of chance is allowed to determine the items selected in the sample,.
2) By rotating the drum: This procedure is a slight modification of the lottery method. In this pieces of wood, tin or cardboard of equal length and breadth, with number 0, 1 or 2 printed on them, are used. Now a list of items in the domain are prepared and divided in 0, 1 or 2 categories. The pieces are rotated in the drum and then requisite numbers are drawn by any person. Now, if the pieces drawn are 20 zeroes, 10 ones and 15 twos, we shall take 20 units from the zero lists, 10 from list 1 and 15 from list 2.
After sampling methods it is important to collect data from the sample. There are different methods for collecting data like mailed questionnaire method. The mailed questionnaire is a printed list of questions sent through mail to respondents to be returned by the respondents after filling up the questionnaire. According to G.A.Lundberg, “Fundamentally, the questionnaire is a set of stimuli to which liberate people are exposed in order to observe their verbal behavior under these stimuli.”
The collected data are analyzed using analytical tools for getting the answers of the hypothesis.
