The toughest part of writing is editing it. The best thing to do for editing is to leave your finished work for a day and then come back and start editing it, as then you would be having a fresh perspective. This not only helps you in removing the expectation of what is written on the page, but it also helps in seeing what is actually there on the page.
The toughest part of writing is editing it. The best thing to do for editing is to leave your finished work for a day and then come back and start editing it, as then you would be having a fresh perspective. This not only helps you in removing the expectation of what is written on the page, but it also helps in seeing what is actually there on the page.
However, not every time you will have the luxury of waiting on your work for a day or so, like in the cases of term paper for your class. In such cases, here are some tips that will help you write and edit your work better.
Firstly, you need to stick to the topic; no matter it is a term paper or an essay, or news brief. The focus of every paragraph needs to be on the overall point. The best way to accomplish this is writing down the principal topic for the entire document. Then after reading each paragraph, ask yourself whether it had anything to do with the topic or not because if it doesn’t then you need to find a good reason to keep it there.
You must remember what type of publication you are writing for as it determines your tone, style, and the use of abbreviations and shorthand. For example, blogs are written in the way you talk, while term papers follow the MLA Formatting and Style Guide, as well as the occasional use of APA Formatting and Style Guide is also present.
You need to use your references. Dictionary and thesaurus are still the most invaluable tools, and whether it is Britannica or Wikipedia, it depends on your preference for the encyclopedia. You just need to trust your instincts and carefully use your reference books.
Check for spelling and grammar. Spell checker is a good tool to check for spelling mistakes in your written term paper or news brief. You must remember there is no excuse for spelling mistakes. In addition, keep your entire work in one tense or the other. Only change sentences when you are explaining events of another tense.
In the end, read your term paper or news brief out loud and then make the decision whether something needs to be fixed or not. Reading out loud and focusing on every single word in the work will highlight even the worst offenses.
