The differences between the essay and poem in a different field of expressing one self.
Writing is an outlet for our thoughts, emotions, ideas and information we know. People write to express their opinions, sentiments, new concepts they created and data which they are witness to. The most common writing forms are articles or essays and poems. These two forms have opposing features but have the same use of being the outlet of what is in the writer's mind, heart, his surroundings and what facts he knows.

As mentioned, essays and poems have the same purpose of facilitating expression of the ideas and sentiments of writers, whether they are professionals or students. With this similarity, we can justify comparing the two forms of writing using different criteria. Let us use genre, length, artistry and technicality.

· Genre – Essays and poems fall in different genres. The essay is a prose and the poem is poetry. Thus, the former is more artistic and the latter is more technical. This is the reason essay writing is used in the academe as a pedagogical tool or a tool used in measuring academic performance, learning or knowledge. On the other hand poetry writing is used sparingly as an artistic or more creative form in expressing knowledge. Most short proses fall under the essay category. An opinion column or article in the newspaper or magazine is an essay. Articles which describe a place, an event or a person can be easily classified under essay writing because such writing includes classifications like descriptive, narrative and opinion.

· Length – The essay is usually longer than the poem. There are long poems but the essay is normally at least 300 words and such can be called short essay writing. A short essay can even be around 500 words or more, depending on the level of academic study it is written in. On the other hand, poems are usually short.

· Ease and Difficulty – The question on which between the essay and the poem is easier to write can be enlarged into a debate. If you are to answer this question, you can use different criteria which may include usage and preparation. As far as usage is concerned, essay writing is used in classroom examinations, while most poetry writing is used for entertainment. This means, essay writing has more weight because education is more important than arts. With the importance of essay writing, it should be more difficult to do. On the other hand, poetry writing can be done out of personal inspiration and personal motivation. Essay writing is required in school and you are not forced to write poems recurringly.

· Artistry and Technicality – Essay writing is more technical and less artistic; while poetry writing is less technical and more artistic. For example, you write English essays and you are required to use a referencing style under the principle of academic writing. You even consult writing services about the technical aspect of your essay. There can be artistry involved but it is less; while in writing poems, artistry is the initial purpose and the final goal.
