Archeological digs of ancient grave sites have found remains, including earrings, that date back some 5000 years, whilst nose piercings have been documented for at least 3500 years.
Body piercing for lip and tongue jewelry was prevalent amongst indigenous African, American Indian and some South American tribes. Other examples of body jewellery that have been common for centuries include nipple and navel studs or rings and, for some Indian cultures, genital piercing.
It appears that there are many reasons for using body jewelry in different cultures. In some cases, body piercing demonstrated rank or status, often of a religious nature; in others it was seen as an enhancement of natural beauty, sexual appeal, or an acknowledgement of reaching adulthood. Some societies used a particular form of body jewllery, such as a nose ring, or belly button ring, almost as a uniform, to show membership of their tribe.
Just as there have always been individuals who rebel against the conventions of their society, so it is with body piercing, with more extreme forms being used to show disdain for the dictats and rules of the tribal elders.

Advice is also given on after-care – an essential element in body piercing – as the healing time can vary from a few weeks to many months, depending on the individual and the siting of the body ornament.
