Ergonomics refers to the controlling of factors that control and influence our work. Office chairs are a small but significant factor that affects our work. In fact, bad office chairs are known to cause problems with temper and even affect overall productivity. Ergonomic office chairs are specifically designed to help people perform well and yet feel positive and healthy at the end of the day. Here are a few features of ergonomically designed office chairs:

Seat Height: Office chair heights should be easily adjustable. Ideal seat height from the floor should range anywhere from 16 to 21 inches as this allows the user to have his/her feet on the floor and the thighs to be horizontal.

Seat Width and Depth: There should be enough width and depth to support users without having to strain. And for those who are exceptionally tall or big, there are plenty of big and tall chairs available. There should be enough depth to allow the user to sit comfortably against the backrest, and there should be a gap of at least 2 to 4 inches between the back of the knees and the seat of the chair.

Lumbar Support: The lower back or the lumbar spine has a natural curve that provides support to the body. But sitting for long hours without proper support to the lumbar spine causes it to strain. Make sure that you buy a chair that offers proper lumbar support so that the user can get a right fit to support the curve of the body.

Material: Materials that are hard and do not allow to breathe can add to the problem. The seating should be made from cloth based material with enough padding for support.

Backrest: As earlier said, a chair should be designed in a manner that it provides support to the lumbar spine. For chairs where the backrests are separated from the seat, there should be enough facility to adjust. And for those where the backrest cannot be separated, the backrest should be adjusted so as to tilt it forward and backward. A lock should be added so as to prevent the chair from tilting too much.

Armrests: The armrest should be so designed that it allows the forearm to be rested parallel to the ground to allow blood circulation to the hands and wrists and also prevent the carpal tunnel syndrome.

Eye Level: Your gaze should be focused on the center of the computer screen. When it is lower or higher than the gaze, you are likely to strain your neck.

These are just some of the features of ergonomic office chairs. The type of chair that suits you would depend on your body type; hence if your chair is a source of distraction for you, make sure that you speak about it to avoid further complications.
