One of the first things you may notice about Atlanta is that the names of so many streets, establishments, and areas begin with "Peachtree." When I arrived in there in 1962, an electronic sign on Peachtree Street kept a tally of the population. Watching the numbers turn over to one million was thrilling, and Peachtree Street stood out as one of a kind.

The old city remains, nestled carefully in the center of a towering, glistening metropolis that expands for many counties and several hundred townships in every direction. The city has literally consumed places that are still called Chamblee, Marietta, and East Point, to name but a few, though you cannot distinguish them as suburbs.

Getting Around Atlanta

If you're planning a trip to Atlanta, the first consideration for your accommodations is the area you'll call home base, and how you want to navigate the city once you are there. The rapid transit and interstate systems are extensive. You can find hotels with easy access to the interstate, the airport, mass transit, or your basic no-hassles taxi.

In 1963, my cousin slipped his Corvette onto the new, unveiled I-85, to see if she would do 100. She did. That 4-lane marvel is 7 lanes in each direction now, and the city has many places to show you, old and new. Wide choices of hotels and restaurants offer accommodation!

Historic Hotels in Atlanta

This global city has a unique and deeply rooted history with landmarks that identify her singularity. There are hotels centrally located to many of these historic landmarks.

If downtown is your destination, you can find a farm to table restaurant in Atlanta, right on Peachtree Street! Think fresh and market, then expand your ideas in every culinary direction.

You may choose one of the many hotels near Fox Theater. It's on Peachtree Street, too, and right in the heart of the city. Taxis are plentiful alternatives to driving or using mass transit after a busy day, and hotels near Fox Theater offer abundant taxi and shuttle services. Your taxi can also drop you at a divine farm to table restaurant in Atlanta for a pre-show feast!

Family Fun

If you're traveling with your family and thinking "vacation," and if you're already downtown, the Georgia Aquarium and Underground Atlanta are nearby! Not far away, you'll also find Turner Field, and Centennial Olympic Park. In the southeast quadrant of the city are historic Grant Park, the zoo and the Cyclorama. Children of all ages enjoy discovering this area.

Due west of the city you can enjoy whole days of screaming delight at Six Flags Over Georgia. Accessible by transit, this is an easy day's pleasure. Beyond the far northeast of the city is scenic Stone Mountain Park offering amusements, a train ride, and a cable car to the top.

The first time I saw Stone Mountain, it was just an enormous rock far out in the country, surrounded by scrub pines. A few hiking paths led to the top and lovers parked in the shadows.

The hiking trails are still there, and I hear the view is still awesome.
