This article will deal with the life and works of Fyodor Dostoevsky, the reason for which he became very popular. His legendary works like ‘The Idiot’ and ‘Crimes and Punishment’ are considered among the best written books of literature. These are very popular and continue to be read by a countless number of people.
The compositions of Fyodor Dostoevsky deal with the complex and multi layered aspects of human psychology and they are set against the troubled social and political landscape of 19th century Russia. A section of the critics consider him to be the precursor of existentialism that was developed in 20th century. His celebrated work ‘Notes from Underground’ that was published in 1864 is noteworthy in this context.
Like many of his contemporaries, the childhood experiences and way of upbringing shaped the mindset of Fyodor Dostoevsky. His father’s violent temperament affected the children and instilled in young Dostoevsky the feeling of sympathy for the oppressed and the poor. There is dispute among the critics regarding the exact relation between the author and his father. The author was a victim of Epilepsy and suffered from several seizures in his life. According to the opinions of some critics his own experiences served as the basis for Prince Myshkin's epilepsy described in ‘The Idiot’. The protagonist Myshkin here in fact was portrayed keeping his own characteristics in mind. he himself was the sufferer with no fault of his own.
During the early part of his career, Fyodor Dostoevsky was involved with the army but it was from this time that he started trying his hands at writing. He devoted all his time to writing after he left the army in 1844. His debut work ‘Poor Folk’ was published in 1845 and it brought him rave reviews from the critics. It was first published in The Contemporary in parts. When the novel was published in a book form, Dostoevsky was propelled in to limelight.
This was followed by a phase of turmoil and hardships. In 1849, Fyodor Dostoevsky was sent to exile along with a group of intellectual liberals named the Petrashevsky Circle. The author escaped death after being exiled and ultimately was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 4 year term. In 1854, he was released and 3 years later tied the knot with Maria Dmitrievna Isaeva. His tenure in prison was largely responsible for the change in his religious and political ideologies.
The later life of Fyodor Dostoevsky was embroiled in personal problems and deaths in the family. His wife’s death followed by the demise of his brother left him mentally devastated. He passed away in 1881 after achieving a cult status in his nation. However, he still is alive among huge number of people.
