Many Americans are still reeling from the economic down turn which hit the country last year. People are still apprehensive about the recovery and spending is at its lows. It is therefore no surprise that people are spending less and less on shopping for gifts and luxury products this holiday season.

Gift cards have ranked second in the most popular gift items for 2010. This is most probably because they are cheap Christmas gifts that are so easy to acquire.

Gift cards are however impersonal and just like cash gifts, they make the recipient feel cheated. They are worse than cash in some levels since you can use money to purchase something you desire. One in four gift card recipients have at least one unused gift cards a year later, more than a third cant find anything they would like to redeem the card for and a third forget about the card entirely. It might also come with added expenses and end up costing the recipient more than they had anticipated.

Gift cards are convenient to have on hand and give out as thank you gifts to those who surprise you. They also serve as great gift items for people out of town since they are so easy to mail. You may also give them to someone whose taste in presents is unknown to you. They are not the best gift items to give to a close relation though.

Toys on the other hand are the third most popular gift ideas for kids. They never run out of fashion and new ones are always coming up day by day. When buying toys, you need to exercise restraint since it is easy to go overboard. You want to make the kids happy because it is the holiday season and it may become difficult to draw the line.

Many parents are tempted to buy their kids the toys they didn’t used to have when they were little. Toy makers and stores have also devised alluring means to make people purchase unnecessarily. It is wise to approach the store with a spending plan or you may end up shaking your head afterwards.

Make a list of the toys you intend to purchase and stick to it. It is also smart to purchase toys which can be shared and played with over and over again. Avoid the sort of toys that a kid plays with for an hour then gets bored with it.

It may be more convenient to buy an expensive video game that will be used by the whole family than a bunch of small toys which are expensive and end up gathering dust.
You can purchase personalised cards to supplement the toys so the kids do not get mad at you for being too frugal.
