Graduation day is a day of mixed emotions.

Graduation is a day when what you say and how you say it matters. Graduation speeches, should, therefore, be prepared with care.
Graduation is a day for celebrations and speeches. It’s a day for relief and gratitude. It’s a day when one way of life ends and another begins. Whether the graduate is going to continue studying or going into the working world life takes on a new twist. Graduation speeches, therefore, should reflect these changing times.

They should also be inspirational. After all what is said on that day should be something the graduates should remember for the rest of their lives. It might be a rule to remember or it could be a saying to savour. Either way what is said on graduation day is very important and the speaker should be aware of this.
Quite often the speaker is the Dean of the college and he has given many such speeches. He may feel stale at this stage. He may need new ideas. That’s understandable because however enthusiastic he may be he may feel that there is a limit to the variations on the theme that he can give. Added to that he is probably a very busy man with very little time for pondering his words of wisdom

Sometimes too a guest speaker arrives. He or she may have accomplished wonders in his or her lifetime. His or her success story may be inspirational but, unless properly delivered, may fail to get the magic across. Sometimes too such a speaker is badly chosen. A hotelier who has managed to buy, and make profitable, a countrywide group of hotels might not be the sort of speaker suited to social science students for instance. Business students, on the other hand, might love to hear what he has accomplished and how he has done it.

Graduation speeches should, therefore, relate to the graduates in question. They should also be topical. In a time of recession the challenges faced will be different to those in boom times. The speaker must take this into account. He should also take into account the fact that everybody likes a laugh and that parents present may not understand technical terms. Otherwise there will be some very restless people in the audience.

Above all graduation speeches should leave the students with an “I can do it” feeling. So they should be uplifting and motivational too. Above all they should be relevant both to the students and to the times in which they are living.
