Autumn and spring are the optimum times for slashing, as pastures and grasses grow quite well at this time of year. Slashers are ideally suited for cutting tall and heavier grasses in both smooth and rough terrain. Slashing improves the appearance of your property and manages weed control naturally reducing the need for excess chemicals.

When cutting pastures with a slasher you can control the height of the cut by setting the height adjustable skids on your implement. Southern Cross Mowers slashers offer five different cutting heights giving you the ability to keep pasture at the level that suits your needs. SXM slashers also have a simple off-set feature that allows you to get closer to fence lines and sheds or underneath trees – this can prove to be very handy and provide an overall neater finish. The off-set position can easily be engaged by undoing two bolts and moving the headstock over to the new position.

When purchasing your slasher you need to make sure it is suited to your tractor size.
A general guide is listed below;
- 4ft slashers are designed for 18-45hp tractors
- 5ft (45HP) slashers are suited to 35-45hp tractors while the heavier duty 5ft (75HP) slashers are designed for tractors up to 35-75hp
- 6ft (75HP) slashers are suited for tractors from 55-75hp.

Wheel kits can also be fitted to slashers, this makes the slasher easier to manoeuvre and provides a neater cut due to less marking from the skids. SXM slashers (5ft & 6ft only) offer optional wheel kits these are easily fitted via four bolts and are fully adjustable.

Paddocks are often scattered with debris it is therefore important that your slasher has deflectors to protect you from thrown objects. Further to this it is also recommended that paddocks, which are to be slashed, be cleared of any debris such as rocks, stones, stumps, etc. prior to slashing. Southern Cross Mowers slashers have both front and rear chain deflectors as standard. It is important that you ensure people are well away from the slasher while in operation – please refer to the product manual for further safety information. SXM slasher manuals are located on the slasher deck in the manual tube.
