It is like playing games with variables, operators etc. It is the study of space, relation, structure, change, and many other topics of pattern. Now I am going to discuss about fractions in mathematics and how to simplify fractions. Fraction is generally a number that can be expressed as the ratio of two numbers. For example: 4/3, here 4 is numerator and 3 is denominator. The most important condition for fraction is that denominator can never be a zero.
For simplifying fractions, following are some rules or we can say that some properties while solving a fraction.
Adding and subtracting of a fraction is done by using this property: x/y + a/b = xb + ay / yb.
For multiplying a fraction, this property comes into account: a/b x c/d = ac/bd
and for dividing a fraction we use this property: a/b divide c/d = ad/bc.
A complex fraction is a rational expression that has a fraction in its numerator, denominator or both. Example to show the complex fraction: x/b / y/d. The sign / denotes the division of two numbers or variables. simplifying complex fractions involve following steps: firstly student need to rewrite the numerator and denominator so that each form a single fraction. Now divide the numerator by the denominator by multiplying the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. In last step we need to simplify the rational expression.
Rational number is an expression which can be written as a fraction a/b. Here ‘a’ is the numerator and ‘b’ is the denominator. For simplifying rational expression, we need to have a good factoring skill. It requires two steps in solving rational expressions. Factor the numerator and denominator is the first step and the second step is divide all common factors that the numerator and denominator have.
Dividing rational expressions is the most difficult part as it requires key skills. Now we are going to learn how to divide a rational expression:
2/5 divide by 9/5 then we need to take a reciprocal of 9/5 . The reciprocal of 9/5 is 5/9.
Multiply 2/5 with the reciprocal. 2/5 x 5/9 = 2/9.
