Fires can break out in a number of ways around the home. You can help to prevent against the devastating effects of household fire by improving your knowledge of the common causes of accidental household fires. Read through these prevention tips issued by the London Fire Brigade and help to protect your home now.

Kitchen risks

Fat and grease are fire hazards. Make sure that you keep your grill, oven and hob clean after every time you cook to avoid build up of grease and fatty deposits.

Always make sure that you keep flammable items for example, kitchen cloths, towels, aprons and electrical leads a good distance away from your kitchen oven and hob.

Make sure that you keep your toaster in an area well away from flammable materials like your kitchen curtains and kitchen cloths and towels. Ensure that you properly clean out your toaster to keep it free of build up and flammable crumbs.

Use a spark igniter when it comes to lighting your kitchen hob, oven and grill as opposed to matches as spark igniters do not produce a naked flame and as such are much safer for use with gas appliances.

Never overload sockets as this can lead to fire. Only ever use a single plug in each socket. If you must use one socket for more than one item, then buy a fused adapter and do not exceed a power output of 13 amps.

If a fire does start, NEVER use water on a hot fat fire. If you make use of a chip pan then you should purchase a fire blacnket as opposed to a fire extinguisher.

Candle fire risks

It is important that you position your candles in a safe place. Always position them in a candleholder that fits them firmly, on a stable, flat, inflammable surface. This means tea lights too as even these can produce enough heat to melt through the plastic surfaces of TVs and bathtubs.

Avoid placing your candles under shelving or in spaces that are enclosed, keep them a minimum of 10cm apart, and keep them well away from flammable materials like cushions and throws.

Never leave a lit candle burning unattended and try to use a teaspoon or a proper candle snuffer to put them out because this method is much safer than blowing them out, which can send sparks flying.

Heating

If you use a portable heater, never sit too close to it and you should place your heater where where it cannot be knocked over, well away from beds, furniture and soft furnishings

Never put anything on a portable heater to dry.
