An episode called “Symphony of Illumination” does not exactly sound like fun when you think about a comedy show like How I Met Your Mother. It is quite obvious that it was not the scriptwriters’ intention to do that either, seeing how things have evolved in this installment.

An episode called “Symphony of Illumination” does not exactly sound like fun when you think about a comedy show like How I Met Your Mother. It is quite obvious that it was not the scriptwriters’ intention to do that either, seeing how things have evolved in this installment.
Robin now believes she is pregnant, and, in the beginning of the episode, she is having an imagined conversation with her unborn kids. The audience is led to believe that the kids’ father is Barney, and not Kevin. Barney, on the other hand, seems happy that he and Robin will have a baby, but he doesn’t stop being a jerk, which earn him a couple of well placed punches. Will the two have a baby? There are plenty of signs telling us this is not really the case.
Robin does not seem to be crazy about the idea of having kids. After all, she cannot stand them, and Barney, tired by her changing moods, starts feeling the same. However, since she is not really pregnant, the situation solves by itself. A celebration takes place, and Marshall wants to transform the house into a giant play of lights, hiring a certain Scott to make it happen. Right then, the doctor calls, and Robin finds out the truth. Even more, she learns she will never be able to be a mother.
Robin fears the reactions the others might have regarding the news, so she conceals the truth, preferring to tell them that the doctor told her she will never be able to become a pole-vaulter. The lie is bought, apparently, but Robin will not be able to hold on to the truth for too long. When visiting a baby store, she gets really depressed and storms out of the store, crying her heart out. In the meantime, Marshall remains stranded on the roof, left there by Scott, a kid that seems to be kind of a villain.
Ted and Lily are concerned about Robin and are trying to find out the source of her sorrow. They try to tease her about having sex with Barney, and, in the end, she just tells them she wants to be with her family for Christmas. Scott eventually gets off the hook, by telling off on Marshall and Lily, and the plot involving him stops here. Ted is the one to offer Robin a lift off for getting to her family in Ohio. While he shows his interest in helping her, Robin spills out the whole truth.
This week’s episode was quite complicated. Robin has always been portrayed as the independent woman that didn’t need any kids to feel complete. However, the idea of seeing her as a mother was not that repulsive, which made the announcement from the doctor quite gut wrenching. Her situation is even more complicated than this. Kevin does not know anything about her trials and tribulations, and she never slept with him, but she slept with Barney, which make her a cheater.
