Mesenchymal stem cells are the best cells which boast for their differentiation capacity in adult stem cells. The difficulty in treatment of PKD lies in repairing the damaged renal intrinsic cells and recovering renal functions. Mesenchymal stem cells transplantation has three main functions of treating PKD.
Differentiation capacity
As Mesenchymal stem cells derive from mesoblast and ecotoblast in the early embryonic development, they have great capacity of self-renewal and multipotency. In the certain internal environment or external environment, they can be cultured into muscle tissue cells, cartilage cells, nerve cells, endothelium cells etc. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells own the potential of developing into the necrotic renal intrinsic cells and replacing their functions. The danger of PKD is not the disease itself but renal intrinsic cells destroyed by it. Their replacement of necrotic cells will enormously repairs the damaged nephrons and recovers renal functions to the greatest extent.

Even in treating septemia caused by infection in late stages of PKD, Mesenchymal stem cells are able to reconstitute hematopoietic system, if they are induced by certain external factors.
Regulating immune system
Numerous studies have proved than Mesenchymal stem cells have been applied into treating autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, in which they can secrete cytokines or promote cellular interactions to restrain the activity of T cells, regulating immune system. In late period, patients with PKD usually have low immunity and unstuck internal environment. Mesenchymal stem cells tend to regulate or restore immune system to improve medical conditions of the patients.
In treating Polycystic Kidney Disease, the main function of Mesenchymal stem cells is to repair and create new renal intrinsic cells, while that of cord blood stem cells is to promote the production of blood, easing local shortage of blood and oxygen in kidneys.
